sustainability
At Borealis Basecamp, we are dedicated to preserving the pristine Alaskan wilderness and promoting sustainable Alaska tourism while minimizing our environmental impact. Our sustainability initiatives encompass environmental stewardship, wildlife protection, and cultural enrichment, ensuring that our operations harmonize with the natural beauty and heritage of Alaska.
Environmental Stewardship
- Electricity: We have invested into connection to the local power grid, eliminating the need for continuous generator use. This transition allows us to consume only the necessary electricity, significantly reducing our carbon emissions.
- Snowmachine Fleet: We are transitioning from 2-stroke to 4-stroke snowmachines, which enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions during our excursions.
- Water Sourcing: By drilling two separate wells and becoming a DEC-certified water system, we have eliminated the need to truck in water daily, removing two trucks per day from the road.
- Heating Efficiency: We have replaced individual Toyo heaters in guest units with a central boiler system, reducing the number of fuel tanks from over 40 to 5. This upgrade minimizes the risk of spills, vapors, and leakage, contributing to a cleaner environment.
- Transportation: Our transportation department economizes daily loads to reduce the number of trips. By operating our own delivery service to aggregate products from Fairbanks, we have reduced delivery trips per week from 25 to 2, further decreasing our carbon footprint.
- Single-Use Product Reduction: We are assessing our use of single-use plastics and products to identify opportunities for reduction or elimination. The results of this assessment and forthcoming plan will be shared to encourage guest participation in these efforts.
- Linen Refresh Program: Guests can choose our “Challenge by Choice” option, opting for daily linen refreshes or conserving resources by limiting changes during their stay.
WILDLIFE PROTECTION
- Responsible Touring Practices: Our staff undergo formal training to maintain respectful distances from wildlife and avoid known calving and birthing areas.
cultural enrichment
Educational Tours: We provide engaging introductions to the history and economy of Alaska through our dogsledding, snowmachining, and flora and fauna walking tours.
